VP Engineering for a software company Married 8
Sherry Payne (Benson 67) and I married in 1968 when we were both at U of N in Lincoln.  After I got a master's there we moved to Minneapolis where I worked for Control Data.  In 1974 we moved to Livermore, CA. and have been in that area ever since.  I worked at Lawrence Livermore National Lab for seven years, then made the jump to a Silicon Valley startup.  I've been working in the Valley ever since, mostly in startups (I'm in my fourth right now).  I also worked out of my home as an independent consultant for eight years.  That was kinda nice, but the irregular income was tough when supporting a family of ten in a not-so-cheap place to live.

We have eight adult kids, which is the real story of our lives.  They are all really great and we're fortunate to be a close group and (mostly) live close to each other.  It's been quite a trip for us.  Sherry has one sister and I have one brother, so it's been a new adventure at each step.  The kids have lots of interesting experiences: school teacher/homemaker, software qa, Marines SWAT team/IT, UC Berkeley business school grad/IT, IT/church work, film production in LA, international gymnast/live in Italy, campus security officer.  Our three oldest are married and have seven kids between them.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion!

James Kucks
Architect Married 2

My wife of 37 years, Marilyn and I, have two grown children and this year we became new grandparents from both kids.  I am an architect and started in the business in 1969 working for a small Omaha firm, Robert Teig Architects (father of Jim Teig, also Benson ‘67’) while finishing my college education.  I am currently a Senior Vice President for HDR where I have been for the last 22 plus years, designing hospitals and healthcare facilities, here in town and across the country.  Just started thinking that retirement may be more fun than work.

Richard Lyon
Sr. Executive Clinical Specialist, Psychiatry and Neurology, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Married 1
I will be unable to attend the 40 year reunion due to business commitments but I appreciate the opportunity to leave a brief update on what's been going on with me.

I still live in the Los Angeles area but moved to Orange County in 1994.  I left the LA County Health Dept. in 1992, after 13 years. During that time I had been Supervisor of the Indo-Chinese Refugee Center, Program Manager of Tuberculosis Control and Director of Training at the AIDS Program Office.

In 1992 I went to work for Burroughs Wellcome Pharmaceuticals as a sales and marketing manager in the Long Beach area.  Two mergers and 16 years later, I am now Sr. Executive Clinical Specialist for the Psychiatry and Neurology Division of GlaxoSmithKline.

My wife Kim and I just celebrated our 33rd anniversary on August 10th.  She is starting her 30th year as a high-school teacher and administrator in the San Gabriel Valley of LA County.

We both hope to retire in 2-4 years.  During retirement we are planning to live abroad part of the year, probably in Thailand as we love the country and the people so much and France where my wife has many cousins and other relatives.

John Markey
Labor Representative Married 2
I live in Folsom, California with my wife, Lori, of 4 years. Yes, that's where the prison is and I ain't in it, but I know I'm now apt to be the subject to great speculation, rumor, and innuendo.  Lori won't come to the reunion with me as she can't understand how any self-respecting individual would ever put up with being called a "bunny" for 4 years at such a formative stage of life.

I have 2 grown children and 5 grandchildren, the latter whom insist on calling me "Grampa" in public, much to my chagrin. Three of them are involved in competition judo so I don't object a whole lot.

I've worked at the California Association of Highway Patrolmen for the past 20 years where I represent CHP officers in disciplinary matters. I am also a professional whitewater riverguide on the weekends.

I enjoyed my time at Benson, although I didn't realize it until later in life when I indignantly found out that having a "career" meant, ah like you mean "work?"  The stuff I liked the most in high school had little to do with going to school, and since the statute of limitations has long since run I suppose we can all talk about it now.

I have one memory which I hope someone would verify:  During our graduation rehearsal at the Auditorium, didn't the middle tier of risers collapse with a third of our class on it?  I couldn't breathe, I was laughing so hard.  Please advise.

John Markey
March 12, 1949 retired Married 2
I guess there is now two of me since I couldn't figure out how to edit the other one from a different email address and had no idea anyway what my previous password was.

I've been married to Lori now, my 2nd wife for 9 years.  I have 2 children and 8 grandchildren who live quite close to me.

I retired in 2010 from my "real job" as a labor representative for the California Association of Highway Patrolmen.  Now, I just putz around, take the grandkids places, and guide commercial whitewater rafts on the three forks of the American River.  On one of the runs of the Middle Fork the guide, that would be me, has to run the boat by themselves over a waterfall called Ruck-a-Chucky Falls, which is why I always wear brown swim trunks.  Its even more exciting than when that miscreant was shooting at me when I was on the Omaha Police Department.

I got to do RAGBRAI, the bike ride across Iowa, two years ago with Todd Furse, not that I saw Todd much as he is basically the Lance Armstrong of BHS as far as I can tell.

I enjoyed my time at Benson and enjoy these reunions.  I am saddened to see that list of names of deceased grow longer each year but sincerely thank all of those who participate in keeping the rest of us up to date.  See ya soon.

January 21, 1949 Self-Employed - Employee Benefits Consultant Married 2
August 3, 2012

Happy 45th Reunion, Class of '67!  It semes like time has flown since our 40th celebration. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing everyone again the weekend of August 10th & 11th.  The Reunion Committee has a fun celebration planned for us.

Work wise, I'm still actively engaged in my employee benefits consulting business.  Health Care Reform has created additional challenges and increased my work load and travel significantly.

On the family front, Marianne and I will be celebrating our 35th anniversary later this year.  Our sons, Dan (29) and Scott (24) continue to be the joy of our life.  I must admit, I may not have used those exact words 10-12 yeas ago.  Dan lives and works here in Omaha; and Scott was recently transferred to Jacksonville, FL.  This is the longest we've lived in one city (14 years).  Prior to moving back to Omaha in August 1998, we lived in Henderson, NV ('96 - '98), Chicago ('92 - '96), Omaha ('85 - '92) and Dallas ('77 - '85).  We've had many wonderful family adventures/experiences over the years.

The photo was taken near our family summer home on Lake Miltona, MN.  My first time Muskie fishing; caught two last summer (I'm shown on the right).

On January 5th this year I had my first ever hole-in-one after 50 years trying to master the game of golf.  I was told by the World Herald I'm now the earliest hole-one recorded, in a calendar year, in the State of Nebraska.  Beats shoveling snow!

I continue to have fond memories of my 4 years at Benson High School; and the great friends resulting from that experience.
